Commitment to sustainability education across the university

ASU has a strong commitment to meaningful education around the Sustainable Development Goals across the university through both curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities. As a comprehensive research university, ASU is placed to address all 17 goals.

ASU offers undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Global Sustainability

Effective Fall 2024, ASU’s General Education program for all undergraduates includes the Global Sustainability Knowledge area. Students will explore sustainability using systems thinking, future projections and ethical implications.

Sustainability Certification

ASU students, faculty, and staff learn to implement sustainability practices. Participants can get their Housing, Events, Lab, Office, and Classroom ASU Sustainability Certified. ASU login required.

Seeds of Sustainability

Available to all members of the university community, ASU’s Sustainability training program teaches basic sustainability concepts and demonstrates how these concepts can be applied by participants in their personal life and at ASU. ASU login required.

Virtual Field Trips

ASU scientists Rimjhim Aggarwal and Ariel Anbar, with funding from the Gates Foundation, developed a training program to allow students to create virtual field trips to narrate their own place-based stories regarding the UN DSGs to be shared with peers around the globe.

Changemaker Maps

Developed by students with ASU’s Changemaker Central, these maps provide a central location for students to identify classes, faculty, clubs and service opportunities across all 17 of the SDGs.

Sustainability Study Abroad

ASU has partnered with NGOs, businesses and governments to develop study abroad programs and associated educational resources focused on sustainability and the SDGs. In 2019, sustainability study abroad programs were offered in 17 countries.

Sustainability Science for Teachers

ASU’s Pathfinder Center developed Sustainability Science for Teachers designed to teach K-8 educators how to use the SDG framework to teach sustainability science.

Sustainability Teachers' Academies

The Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Teachers’ Academies provides educators with the knowledge and resources needed to bring the science of sustainability into any K-12 classroom.
